What is answer engine optimisation?

Answer engine optimisation is how your Australian business gets named inside ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI answers. Run a simple customer test this week.

Answer engine optimisation is the work of getting your business named and recommended inside AI answers, not only ranked as a blue link.

I am Adam Stewart. I run Digital Bond, and I write for founder-led Australian businesses that want to be chosen when a customer asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI Overviews who to hire.

This is not a new ranking report. It is not a reason to throw out SEO. It is a shift in where recommendations happen.

What is answer engine optimisation, in plain English?

SEO gets your page ranked, while AEO and GEO get your business named and recommended inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews.

That is the whole idea.

Someone asks ChatGPT for the best accountant for a growing ecommerce brand in Melbourne. Or Gemini for a waterproof hiking pack under $200. Or they search Google, and the AI Overview names three options before a single blue link appears.

If your business is one of those names, you are in the conversation. If you are not, the click you used to fight for may never happen.

I use the full phrase on purpose. Search “AEO” on its own and you will get American Eagle, authorised economic operator, and a pile of other things that have nothing to do with marketing. If you are looking this up for an Australian business, search answer engine optimisation.

How is answer engine optimisation different from SEO?

SEO is still about pages, queries and rankings.

You publish something useful. Google works out what it is about. If you earn the spot, a person sees your link and chooses to click.

Answer engine optimisation is about being selected as the answer.

The person may never see ten blue links. They get a shortlist, a recommendation, or a paragraph that already decided for them.

You still need a site that can be understood. You still need reviews, a clear offer and pages that say what you actually do. This work sits on top of SEO. It does not replace it.

The practical difference is the job you are hiring the content to do.

SEO asks: can a search engine find this page and rank it?

Answer engine optimisation asks: can an AI system explain who we are, who we help, and when we are the right choice?

If your homepage is a vibe and a logo, Google might still rank a blog post. An answer engine will often skip you, because it cannot tell a customer when to pick you.

People also type “aeo vs seo” as if those are rival teams. They are not. Do the work that makes you understandable. Measure whether you get named.

Where does generative engine optimisation fit?

You will also see generative engine optimisation, and people using AI search optimisation for the same shift. The labels are still settling.

Here is how I keep them straight.

SEO: you want the page to rank.

AEO: you want to be the named answer.

GEO: you want generative systems (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google’s AI answers) to use your information when they write that answer.

For a founder-led business, you do not need three strategies. You need one habit. Make it easy for a machine to describe you accurately, then check whether it can.

Why should Australian businesses care now?

A lot of this conversation is written for American enterprise SEO teams. That is not who I write for.

I work with founder-led Australian businesses. More than a decade of marketing systems, now through Digital Bond. The useful version is smaller and more commercial.

Your customers already use AI Overviews. Some of them are already in AI Mode. They already ask ChatGPT and Gemini before they call you. You do not need a product review of those features. You need to know they sit in the path to a purchase.

Australian search behaviour is also its own thing.

We spell optimisation with an s. We say suburb names Google has misspelled for a decade. We search “near me” with a postcode, not a state abbreviation. We compare GST-inclusive prices.

If your site, Google Business Profile and directory listings use mixed spelling, vague service areas, or US-centric category language, an answer engine has less to hold onto.

Treat the Australian version as its own job, not a photocopy of a US playbook.

Clear beats clever. A page that says “we install heat pumps in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne” will beat a page that says “we deliver next-generation climate solutions” every time. The model does not need poetry. It needs facts it can repeat without guessing.

What does a customer actually ask before they buy?

This is the test I keep coming back to.

Do not ask ChatGPT “what is AEO”. Ask it the question a buyer would type at 9.40pm, on the couch, trying to shortlist.

Try this

What's the best [product or service] for someone in [city or situation] who needs [specific outcome]?

Name real businesses if you can. For each one, say why they fit, what you are unsure about, and what a buyer should check next.

Then run the same prompt in Gemini.

Then try a more local version.

I am in [suburb], Australia. I need [service] for [situation]. Who would you recommend, and what should I look at on their website before I enquire?

Write down three things.

  1. Did you appear?
  2. If you did, was the reason accurate?
  3. If you did not, who did, and what did they make easy to understand that you have not?

That third list is your brief. Not “write more blogs”. Fix the facts a model cannot find.

If you want the commercial version of this test, with a stricter buying-question prompt, I wrote would ChatGPT recommend your business as the companion.

What actually helps you get named?

I will not dress this up as a secret framework. The public version of the playbook is boring, which is why it works.

Make the offer machine-readable. One sentence for what you sell, who it is for, where you do it, and what a good outcome looks like. Put that on the homepage, the service page, and your Google Business Profile.

Put proof where a model can see it. Reviews with specifics. Case-style pages that name the problem and the result. A FAQ written in the customer’s words, not yours.

Diversify the places you can be found. Your own site matters. So do reviews, press, industry directories, and a complete Google Business Profile. If the only accurate description of your business lives in a PDF or a sales deck, an answer engine will invent a worse one, or skip you.

Keep the language consistent. If you are a “fractional CFO for trades businesses” in one place and a “strategic finance partner” in another, you have made the model guess. Guessing is how you get left out.

Do not block the systems that need to read you. If your site cannot be crawled, none of the writing work matters.

Start with one query family. The question that sits right before a buying conversation. Win that explanation first. Then expand.

The advantage goes to the business with the clearest information, not the smartest model. I have watched people chase tools when a rewritten services page would have done more.

What this is not

It is not a reason to publish forty AI-written blogs this month.

It is not a replacement for paid ads, email, or a salesperson who can close.

It is not something you set and forget with a plugin.

And it is not only for ecommerce.

A plumber, a clinic, a B2B wholesaler and a Shopify store all get recommended in different ways. The plumber lives in Maps, reviews and a tight service-area page. The Shopify store lives in product detail, comparisons and merchant content. The B2B business lives in a clear customer profile, a pricing posture and third-party mentions.

Same job. Different surfaces.

You can do this work without a new department. You cannot do it if nobody owns the sentence that describes the business.

If the visibility test exposes a wider offer, workflow or implementation gap, the AI consultant Australia page explains how Digital Bond handles that work without turning AEO into a substitute for SEO.

My honest read

My honest read: if an AI assistant cannot describe what you sell, who it is for and when to recommend you, you do not have a tactic problem. You have a clarity problem. Do not pay anyone to “do AEO” until you can pass the customer-question test yourself.

The guardrail is simple. Use AI to find the gap. You still decide what gets sent, published or spent.

FAQ

Is answer engine optimisation the same as SEO?

No. SEO is still about ranking a page for a query. Answer engine optimisation is about being named inside the answer a person sees in ChatGPT, Gemini or a Google AI Overview. You need both. A page that cannot be found will not be cited, and a page that ranks but never explains who you help will not get recommended.

Do small Australian businesses need this yet?

Yes, if your customers already ask an assistant before they call. That includes trades, clinics, ecommerce and B2B. You do not need an enterprise team. You need a clear offer, a complete Google Business Profile, reviews a model can read, and one buying question you test every month.

What should I do if ChatGPT never names us?

Look at who did get named. Copy the structure of their public facts, not their adjectives. Fix one page, one profile field, or one directory listing so the missing fact exists in plain English. Then run the same question again in a fortnight.

What to do this week

Pick one buying question. Run it in ChatGPT and Gemini. Note who gets named and why.

Then fix one public page so the missing facts exist in plain English. Australian spelling, real suburbs, real outcomes.

If you want a wider view of the system around this (acquisition, conversion, follow-up, measurement), the Digital Bond scorecard takes about four minutes and does not ask for an email.

I still care about rankings. I just refuse to pretend rankings are the only recommendation that matters now.
